Sweet Tomato Jam

Updated: Jun 25

What goes perfectly with peanut butter, toast, rice cakes, and crackers? This delicious sweet tomato jam! When I make jam, I like to make flavors that are not easy to find in stores and use less sugar than store-bought versions. Nothing beats homemade tomato jam!

Wondering how to make tomato jam? This homemade jam recipe is simple and packed with aroma and flavor. The sugar creates the perfect thick texture and a slightly caramelized flavor that I love. Slow-cooked to perfection! With just enough sugar to create thickness, but not too much that it overpowers the taste.

This is a particular fruit jam recipe that my mom loves to make. Her house smells incredible whenever tomato jam is simmering in the kitchen. In times like these, a little taste of home is much needed.

Get some ripe tomatoes and a bit of sugar, and let’s make this uniquely delicious tomato jam!

Details:

Yield: 1 3/4 cups ( 14 oz)

Prep time: 10 min

Cooking time: 50 min

Total time: 60 min

Ingredients:

6 red Roma tomatoes (about 2 lbs)

1.5 cups brown sugar

Instructions:

  1. Peel the tomatoes.

  2. Cut the tomatoes in half and remove seeds (optional).

  3. Cut the tomatoes in medium pieces.

  4. To a blender, add the tomato pieces and blend.

  5. Add the blended tomatoes and sugar to a medium pot. Bring to a boil and reduce to simmer.

  6. Simmer for 50 minutes stirring every 10 minutes. Once you can see the bottom of the pot while stirring slowly, that’s when the jam is ready! Let it sit to cool at room temperature before storing it.

Notes:

  • Store in airtight jars for about 6 weeks.

  • For a slightly less sweet version, use a cup or 1 1/4 cup of sugar instead.

  • Uses for tomato jam: Serve on toast, crackers, rice cakes, oatmeal, banana bread, fruit salad, or any other dessert!

Approximate cost:

$8.50. This takes into account the measurements listed in the ingredients section and for the main ingredients only.
